When fish farmers explain that they are the solution to limited wild seafood harvests, they are often subjected to put downs such as, 'well, it takes 3kg of wild fish to produce 1kg of farmed salmon'. In effect, they are told they are depleting fish supplies rather than adding to them and that the whole aquaculture industry is heading into a 'fishmeal trap'. What nonsense! Follow the link, above, to the paper by Bjorn Kok and colleagues to understand the ins and outs of the fish in, fish out debate. They calculate that fed aquaculture produces 4 times more fish than it consumes and that salmon and trout systems are net neutral. This comes as no surprise to industry insiders but its an important message that needs to be spread widely. And it's at the heart of GAA's calling to highlight aquaculture as 'The future of Food'. Long live aquaculture, long live the GAA!
